Church of the Holy Spirit: prayers of Roxolana, appearance of the Virgin and church services in the museum

The Rogatinsky Church of the Holy Spirit in the Carpathian region is one of the oldest in Ukraine. It was built over 500 years ago from oak planks and without a single nail. Since 2013, the Svyatoduhovskaya Church has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Among foreign tourists, the wooden church was most loved by guests from Turkey, because this temple brings them closer to the great Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska.

TEMPLE ON THE SHORE OF A ROTTEN LYPE

With its architecture, the Svyatoduhovskaya church in Rogatin corresponds to all the canons of the Galician churches. However, it has certain features. It is built in a single ensemble with a bell tower, which distinguishes it from other architectural monuments.

It is located on the banks of the full-flowing river Rotten Lipa, and this constantly created the threat of the bell tower slipping into it. Therefore, it was very often strengthened, and later, in 1675, the bell tower was completely rebuilt. The main parts of the temple – the Babinets, the nave and the altar – were only restored.

“The nave is the central part of the temple. Nava, or nave, translated from Latin means “ship”. The fact is that when people enter the temple, they seek salvation, so there is a certain association between the temple and the ark of Noah. As for Babinets, the most common version claims that this is part of the temple in which women prayed. The altar is traditionally located in the east. But the entrance to the temple is in the south wall, while usually the doors to the temples are placed from the west. Such a feature existed only in Bukovina and Rogatinsk. First of all, this was done to make the church brighter, ”says Stepan Pushkar, senior researcher at the Carpathian Museum of Art.

The main iconostasis of the Svyatoduhovskaya church was created in 1650. This is one of the three oldest iconostases of Ukraine, which date back to the middle of the 17th century. It combines Baroque with the Renaissance and Dutch mannerism – a movement that is characterized by moodiness and artificiality.

“When work began on the creation of the iconostasis, a problem arose regarding the depiction of individual biblical subjects. The local artists used not only Ukrainian publications, but also German ones. This practice is very interesting. Thanks to this, we can see individual images that are copies of European artists, the same Egidius Sadeler (Dutch artist. – author) and Leonardo da Vinci, ”says Stepan Pushkar.

Local artists who copied European masterpieces tried to adapt them to the traditions of this region. So, redrawing the engraving “The Struggle of Jacob with the Angel”, the Ukrainian masters did not draw a caravan of camels, but Jacob, who was only shown in a shirt in the original picture, was “dressed” in linen pants. Also on the iconostasis of the Svyatoduhovskaya church, you can see that the biblical characters are dressed in clothing characteristic of the Dutch or Germans of the early 17th century. Scientists say that “this only proves the limitation of the mural and the desire of artists to talk about that era.”

The authors of the Rogatins icons are still unknown. But their works still attract the attention of connoisseurs of sacred art, as they embody the “golden age of the Ukrainian iconostasis”.

“The key icons are the Mother of God-Hodegetria and Christ the Pantocrator, placed on both sides of the royal gates, on which there are six medallions. Above are 12 holidays: from the beginning of the year in September to the Assumption of the Virgin. This is a very important tier, as it gave people an idea of the holidays for which they need to prepare. In fact, it was a calendar. Above is the tier of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ to be held, and many saints. These are not the 12 disciples of Christ, but only the faces of the saints who pray for the sins of people. The tier is even higher – the prophets, and finally, the Crucifixion, performed in the Orthodox tradition, ”says the scientist.

According to him, the Svyatoduhovsky temple was painted not only inside, but also outside. This is confirmed by the drawing of the Sun, in which there is an image of Christ on the Throne, which is preserved on the outer wall of the church. According to church canons, the Sun is a symbol of Jesus Christ, and the crescent is the Virgin.

“The fact that the church was painted outside is not only the preserved images. There are places where the stakes that secured the fabric were preserved, as well as a few fragments of fabric and paint. These are the remains of ancient murals. In old photographs you can see murals on the south wall of the temple, ”the scientist noted.

He emphasizes that the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit was built without a single nail.
