Treasure Island in Khoroshev

The unique, unique in Ukraine Museum of precious and decorative stones is located 55 kilometers from Zhytomyr in the urban village of Khoroshev.

Many have heard about the museum, but not everyone managed to see the luxury and wealth that are hidden in the deep bowels of this land.

Near the houses in the village you can see cars loaded with firewood. There is nothing to be surprised, because this is the only non-gasified district of the Zhytomyr region. The apartments are heated with electricity, and in the private sector with wood. Along with colorful shops and entertainment venues are lonely abandoned houses. Here, as in large cities, people are in a hurry to drink aromatic coffee, although there are no coffee houses or tea clubs in the village, but only a metal trailer at the bus stop. Nobody allocates millions of hryvnias to street dog sterilization programs. Dogs look deep into everyone’s eyes and expect that the good soul will at least treat them to something. Time seemed to stop in the local streets, some of which still glorify the names of Marx and Volodarsky. However, local patriotism is manifested everywhere in state flags and interesting monuments. According to an old habit, most locals call their regional center Volodarsk (the former full name is Volodarsk-Volynsky). Khoroshev is famous in the world for his Volyn deposit of chamber pegmatites, where valuable minerals of beryl and topaz occur.

MUSEUM REMAINED IN MEMORY OF DEPOSIT

Once there was a large enterprise called Zapadkvartszamotsvety, which provided jobs for the majority of the Khoroshev population, but now it has become private property and has significantly reduced production capacity. The most optimistic about the restoration of the field’s fame is its exceptionally amazing exhibits behind the glass of museum windows.

Museum Director Vitaly YakovlevaMany interesting facts that cannot be found in the wilds of the Internet, said the director of the State Institution “Museum of Precious and Decorative Stone” Vitalia Yakovleva. A friendly and smiling woman in red beads meets in her spacious office. She is a geological and mineralogist by profession, so she can tell a whole story about every pebble. Vitaly Yakovleva has been working in the museum since 2002, and became director in 2008.

“In Khoroshev there is the only deposit in Ukraine where quartz, beryl, topaz were mined in industrial quantities. Quartz was of particular value, because piezoelectric quartz was removed from it – this is the mineral from which frequency resonators were made for the space industry, aircraft, submarines. 70% it’s our Volynsk deposit that supplied the piezoelectric quartz for the defense industry of the former USSR. Since the early 1990s, the mineral has lost its value, and valuable beryl and topaz have entered the pedestal, “begins acquaintance with the Vitaly Yakovlev Museum.

In the Volyn field, which reaches 20-25 km in length and 1.5-2 in width, chamber pegmatites were discovered, which formed 1 billion 700 million years ago. These geological bodies, rich in unique minerals and rocks, became the goal of expeditions.

Field development began in the 1930s. It is known that during the Second World War, the German invaders attracted captured geologists to the search for the piezoelectric quartz. But the powerful flourishing of the mining industry in the territory of the Khoroshevsky district began after the war.

Quartz with Manganese Dentrites Each geological exploration brought unique mineral samples, and over time there were so many of them that it became necessary to organize the collection. In addition, young specialists who came to work at the field had to be trained on specific samples. So in 1951, geologists V. Klochkov and A. Salmanin created a museum from the exhibits of the Volyn field. On excursions they recall that the first collection of minerals existed before the war in the village of Pisarevka, but not one of its samples has survived to our time.

Geologists exchanged rock samples with other enterprises, and so the collection gradually expanded. In 1992, all exhibits were moved to a new building, where they are still stored. Subsequently, in 1996, the Ministry of Finance bought the museum with the entire collection from the Zapadkvartstsotsvetsy enterprise and it received the status of a state institution.

“A landmark event for the Museum of Precious and Decorative Stone took place in 2001, when it was awarded the status of a scientific object that constitutes the national treasure of Ukraine. Its funds were formed by ordinary geologists, miners, drillers who mined valuable breeds, and therefore our institution is the property of all who he worked here, “notes Vitaly Yakovleva.
